Indigo Buntings

Blue Birds of Happiness

2585-copy1.jpgSaw this little beauty yesterday on the feeder.  Amazing color on these birds.  The blue bird of happiness was a sign upon awakening to hear the news.  They killed Osama Bin Ladin in a raid in Pakistan.

This little bird is so pretty. I have never seen a bluebird like this. Is it a baby? Such fluffy pretty colored feathers. Is this a different species that the blue birds and blue jays we have here in TX?

    Bob and Deb,
I had a new squirrel come to eat yesterday. It wasn’t a baby squirrel but he had red fur… I do mean red. None of the other squirrels I have ever fed here have been this color. He really stood out among the group of 7 squirrels that were all eating at the same time. His fur was longer and looked kind of fluffy too. I have never seen a squirrel like this before. You know what kind of squirrels we have here in Arlington. What kind of squirrel could he have been. I have not seen him yet today but it has rained steadily here all day. It has stopped for now and I am getting ready to put out new feed to see if this squirrel will come again. The fur under his arms and on his tummy almost looked like it could have had some white mixed in. He was pretty but I do love all my little babies so that are feeding right now. Deb, I think of you when I feed them as they come right up to eat when I call them and will all eat together as I stand there right next to them while they eat. They are all young little squirrels. I hope they aren’t becoming too tame. It amazes me that they even come when I go out and call them.

    Hi munford,

It’s a Indigo Bunting and a beautiful blue color. It’s different species from the Blue Birds I think your just to seeing. Same blue Jays here in Oklahoma as there is in Texas.

Your new squirrel may just be a different color phase of the fox squirrel. I don’t think there is another species of squirrels there in Central Texas besides the fox. There may be a occasional grey but I think they are mostly farther east. I don’t think there is any little red squirrels or any pine squirrels around but I may be wrong.
